Asadullah Galib scored a century for Sylhet on Day 2 of the fourth round game between Sylhet and Khulna Division in Bangladesh’s National Cricket League (NCL).
But more than his 242-ball 115-run knock, the enduring memory of his 382 minutes in the middle at Cox’s Bazar Academy Ground will be the way he departed.
The incident occurred when Asadullah Galib was facing Mahadi Hasan after having scored 115 runs, with his batting partner Amite Hasan having scored 211 off 450 balls at that stage with the team at 465/3.
Mahadi Hasan ran in to bowl and while delivering the ball, it slipped out of his hand. The ball rose high into the sky. The camera caught sight of Mahadi Hasan and non-striker Amite Hasan comically turning their back to the batter to try and see where he ball had flown.
The ball meanwhile was making its way towards the batter in slow motion.
Asadullah Galib, realising this was a loopy delivery that could be deposited into the stands, charged down the track to get to it. He did catch the ball flush with the middle of his bat and gave it a whack.
His effort to hit the ball for a six however was ill-conceived. The ball had no pace by itself, so Asadullah Galib needed more energy than usual to hit it out the park. The ball sailed high and landed comfortably into the palms of
substitute fielder Jawad Royen.
To make matters worse for Asadullah Galib, he fell over in the follow through of his shot from the effort of hitting the ball out the park.
