Watch: David Warner suffers painful blow as he hits himself with broken bat in Big Bash League

Former Australia batter David Warner was on the receiving end of a rather painful knock when his bat broke and hit him on the back of his head in the Big Bash League (BBL).

In a match between Sydney Thunders and Hobart Hurricanes, Warner played a delivery by Riley Meredith towards mid-off. This resulted in the handle getting partially dislocated from the other part of the bat and hitting the player on his head.

In the match, after being asked to bat first by the Hurricanes, Warner scored an unbeaten 88 runs to guide Sydney to 164 runs. However, it wasn’t enough as Tim David’s 68 off 38 helped Hobart win the match in 16.5 overs.

Last week, Warner made a blistering return to the Big Bash League (BBL), scoring an unbeaten 86 runs and helping Sydney Thunder defeat Melbourne Renegades by 8 runs.

Coming into bat, Warner took 57 balls to reach 86 while he took 40 deliveries to reach his half century in an innings peppered with 10 fours and 2 sixes as Sydney posted 156/4 after 20 overs.

Wes Agar would be another architect of Sydney’s win as his spell of 4/32 helped his team to restrict Melbourne to 148/8.

Warner’s international career also came to an end last year when Australia were knocked out of the T20 World Cup with the batter’s last match being the Aussies’ 24-run defeat to India in the Super 8 match of the tournament.

The 38-year-old Warner, who made his international debut in January 2009 in a T20I match, played his final ODI match in the World Cup final win over India in November 2023 and his last Test against Pakistan in January.

He retired as Australia’s highest scorer and seventh-most prolific batter in the world in T20 format with 3,277 runs from 110 matches, at an average of 33.43 and strike rate of 142.47. He scored one hundred and 28 fifties in the shortest format.
