What started as a friendly golf exhibition is anything but now, with tempers flaring after the end of play on day two at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.
After racing into a five-point lead on day one, Europe extended their advantage over Team USA following an extraordinary morning on the second day of action in Rome to lead 9½-2½ going into the afternoon fourballs. The Americans hit back however, with three wins from the four late matches. Europe went into the final day’s single with a five-point lead.
The Americans, who had not won on European soil in 30 years, rallied as they added five further points, but were unable to deny Europe who, in the end,m won the Ryder Cup 16½-11½.
