Monday evening news briefing: Nigel Farage to stand for election

The new leader of Reform UK will stand in Clacton, Essex, and will formally launch his candidacy on Tuesday.

After previously claiming he would not stand in the July election, Mr Farage told a conference in London: “I’ve changed my mind.” When making the announcement Richard Tice, the former leader of Reform UK, said he had “invited” Mr Farage to take over the party leadership. Angela Rayner and Penny Mordaunt to face off in TV debate

The Commons leader and deputy Labour leader will face off in the first seven-way debate of the election campaign on the BBC. Hosted by Mishal Husain on Friday, the debate will also feature representatives from the Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru, Green Party and Reform UK.
