What’s the problem?
I’ve had an aspidistra for about 30 years. It’s not dead, but it’s never thrived. I’d love it to look dark green and glossy with new leaves coming through.
Diagnosis
A lack of lush leaves suggests your plant may not be receiving enough light or its soil could be exhausted of nutrients. Infrequent fertilising or improper watering can slow its growth and leave it lacklustre.
Prescription
Aspidistras grow best in bright, indirect light. Move your plant to near a window but avoid direct sun. Repot the plant if it hasn’t been repotted in the past few years. Use fresh, well-draining potting soil, and trim any damaged roots. Most importantly, fertilise during spring and summer with a balanced liquid feed, diluted to half strength. Water thoroughly when the top 2cm of soil feels dry, but avoid waterlogging.
Prevention
To ensure long-term success, keep your aspidistra in a consistent environment, away from drafts and temperature fluctuations. Wipe the leaves occasionally to remove dust. With a little extra care, your aspidistra can transform into the lush, green beauty you’ve been hoping for.
