Bianca Andreescu undergoes emergency surgery, delays season start
Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu postpones her 2025 debut after an emergency appendectomy, aiming for a clay-court return.
Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, has postponed the start of her 2025 season after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The 24-year-old Canadian was slated to make her season debut at the Mérida Open in Mexico later this month but will now focus on recovery with an eye toward returning during the clay-court season. Andreescu shared on social media: “I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pain in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy. The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery.”
This setback follows a series of challenges for Andreescu, who has faced multiple injuries and has been vocal about her mental health journey. After a standout 2019 season, her career has been marred by physical ailments, including a back injury that sidelined her for significant portions of the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In late 2021, she took a mental health hiatus, emphasizing the importance of self-care and reflection. Despite these hurdles, Andreescu has shown resilience, returning to competition and expressing a renewed passion for the sport.
In 2024, she returned to the tour after a nine-month absence due to a back injury, reaching the third round of the French Open in her comeback. Bianca Andreescu has not competed in any tournaments in 2025. She had planned to start her season at the Mérida Open in Mexico later this month but had to withdraw due to this appendectomy. As she embarks on her recovery, the tennis community remains hopeful for Andreescu’s return to full health and competitive form during the upcoming clay-court swing.
Inside the Baseline…
Another setback, another fight ahead. Some players seem to glide through their careers untouched by the physical and mental toll of the sport, but for Bianca Andreescu, the journey has been anything but smooth. Just when momentum starts to build, another roadblock appears. Yet, if history has shown anything, it’s that she never backs down. The resilience, the fire, the ability to come back stronger have always been defining traits. This latest hurdle is just another test, and betting against her has never been a smart move.
