Shubman Gill under the scanner?
Having last made a Test fifty outside Asia Down Under three years ago, India No. 3 Shubman Gill is likely walking a thin rope as he approaches the Melbourne Test. According to emerging reports, Gill could likely lose his spot to the in-form KL Rahul who may move down a rung as skipper Sharma braces to return to his opening slot. In such a scenario, it is expected that Gill could be swapped by an extra spinner in Washington Sundar, who played the first Test in Perth. With excessive heat conditions prevailing and predicted for the entirety of the Test, the pitches could crumble quicker and bring spinners into the equation.
Should Gill be retained, the 25-year-old could bat at No. 6 behind Virat Kohli with Sundar replacing seam all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
